New Social Entrepreneurship Study Abroad Opportunity

The Office of Entrepreneurship and Liberal Arts at Wake Forest University is working with Connect-123 to offer students with a new study abroad option and social entrepreneurship internship possibilities in Cape Town, South Africa.

Cape Town Wake Forest students now have the chance to sign up for a semester in a unique international student program at the University of Cape Town in South Africa through this new study abroad affiliate partnership. As part of the semester long program students are provided with the hands-on chance to work side by side with local social entrepreneurs. This internship allows students to experience a substantial amount of fieldwork in an area of the world booming with social entrepreneurship and non-profit opportunities.

Connect-123 offers internship opportunities in Cape Town in nearly every industry and occupation. Past entrepreneurial internships have included work in advertising, business consulting, micro-finance organizations, sustainability development, human rights organizations and more. Any Wake Forest student who takes on an internship abroad through Connect-123 will have not only an incredible international working experience but also earn hours towards the internship requirements of the Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise minor at the university.

As far as traditional coursework, international students in the Connect-123 program at Cape Town University are required to take a course entitled Building Emerging Enterprises with the other students enrolled in the program. In addition to this course students will have the opportunity to enroll in a wide range of business and other electives where they will be in class with local University of Cape Town students.

The program provides accommodations for all of the Connect-123 students together at a large, centrally located residential building within walking distance of campus. Connect-123 also offers students a variety of elective social and volunteer opportunities. These events provide students with a way to meet new people and explore the unique culture in the surrounding areas of Cape Town.  Every week Connect-123 organizes events that range from luxurious wine tastings, cooking classes, and day cruises to volunteer events at orphanages, shelters and other non-profits.

Spring 2010 semester will be the first time Wake Forest University students can participate in the Connect-123 program. Wake Forest University students can apply for scholarship support through the International Study Abroad Office. Applications for the Spring 2010 semester are due on October 30, 2009.  Applications can be made through the Connect 1-2-3 website at www.connect-123.com.
