Creativity: Worlds in the MakingA National Symposium at Wake Forest UniversityMarch 18, 19, and 20, 2009 Save the Date and Spread the Word! www.wfu.edu/creativity Creativity: Worlds in the Making is an initiative from the Office of Entrepreneurship and Liberal Arts and the Program for Creativity and Innovation. This will be a dynamic national symposium at Wake Forest University on new currents and trends in creative practice and innovation to be held March 18, 19, and 20, 2009.
The objective of the symposium is to stimulate new thinking about what creativity is, how it is practiced across cultural domains and what its potential applications can be, especially in relation to humane and sustainable outcomes and impact. This interactive symposium is designed to position creative engagement as a core literacy in today’s global environment; further the national discourse on creativity; and model creative research and innovative collaboration as a bridge between the arts, humanities and sciences and from academia to society and back again. Diverse perspectives from the arts, humanities, sciences and entrepreneurship will pose questions and challenges about the role that creativity plays in higher education and in society through its capacity to shape dynamic and interdependent future ‘worlds.’ The interactive format of “Creativity: Worlds in the Making” combines keynote speakers, traditional panel presentations, innovative performance and exhibitions with participatory working sessions. Featured guests include: Harvard biochemist and social entrepreneur David Edwards who will engage the audience with provocative ideas on the imperative of creativity. Pioneering performance artist and twice MacArthur “genius” award recipient Meredith Monk will give a centerpiece concert and keynote address. They are joined by a growing number of daring creativity leaders including Josh Frieman, an astrophysicist at Fermilab; filmmaker, poet and author Abigail Child; and one of North Carolina’s newest arts mavericks, Emil Kang, executive director of Carolina Performing Arts at Chapel Hill. We are looking forward to a range of panels, papers, presentations and interactive sessions that will make this event one of the not-to-be-missed of 2009. Papers, panel ideas, interactive sessions and/or other ideas for submissions are welcome. Interdisciplinary and/or diverse disciplinary orientations are encouraged. 300 word abstracts should be submitted by Wednesday, October 15, 2008.
